MERIDIAN (AP) — National Guard Bureau Chief Craig McKinley says a Meridian Guard unit remains a vital component of the military despite changes in its mission.
McKinley visited the Mississippi National Guard's 186th Air Refueling Wing in Meridian on Tuesday.
The Base Realignment and Closure Commission voted to move the KC-135 refueling aircraft from the unit four years ago.
There has been some uncertainty about the future of the 186th. It is slated to get C-27 transport aircraft in 2015, but it's not yet clear what mission the unit will have in the meantime.
Mississippi Adjutant General William Freeman says he doesn't anticipate many changes with the number of jobs at the Meridian base.
