LAUREL —
Improvement from week to week is what Keith Braddock continues to see in his young Northeast Jones football team.
Improvement on offense and defense is definitely what the Tigers need Thursday when they travel to take on 1-1 Wayne County, ranked No. 10 in the Clarion-Ledger’s Super 10 poll.
Wayne County lost 26-0 to No. 2 Meridian last Friday. The Tigers (0-2) fell 36-0 to West Jones last week.
“Once again I saw improvement against West Jones,” said NEJ head coach Keith Braddock. “I saw it from the jamboree with Taylorsville, then from week one to week two. It’s just like I said, last week my team is taking baby steps but we will get there.”
Wayne County head coach Marcus Boyles said his young team needs to improve as well.
“I thought our defense played really well against Meridian,” said Boyles. “ We kept them on a short field. The longest play they had was 35 yards, but we still have some growing up to do on offense.”
Sophomore Jarvis Chambers will start at quarterback for the War Eagles, with Dric Jones at one of the running backs.
“This week our quarterback will see another good team and get some more experience,” said Boyles. “But I know coach Braddock’s team is hungry and is coming off a tough loss against West Jones. He will have his guys ready to play. As for us, we have got to continue to get better before we take on George County and a few others to have a run at a championship.”
Although the Tigers are 0-2 they are ready for the challenge.
“The team’s attitude is great,” said Braddock. “They have practiced very hard. We had a meeting today and I told them they had two choices: One to just fold up and start again next year or keep working and fighting hard and win a couple of games and get in the playoffs. If we can get to the playoffs, our record goes to 0-0. We will just see what happens.”
“I know Northeast Jones will come in here Thursday ready to win,” said Boyles. “We have got to play hard.”
“We are going to go into Wayne County and take some chances and play hard,” said Braddock. “I don’t mean we are going to do anything crazy, but we are not going to concede the game before it’s even played.
“They (Wayne County) are a good physical, fast, strong team,” Braddock added. “A typical Wayne County team that will be a contender for the South 5A championship. We are going to have to play really hard to beat them. We are the underdog once again, but that’s okay.”
