Jones County Junior College had a chance to pull off a huge upset in women’s soccer here Saturday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Field.
The Lady Bobcats had a 1-0 lead with 16 minutes remaining when the sixth-ranked Polk State College (Fla.) Vikings scored to tie the contest.
The game would end in a 1-1 draw, but JCJC head coach Dolores Deasley was pleased with her team’s performance.
“I thought we played well,” she said. “I am proud of them.”
Polk State had several shots on goal in the opening half. However, the Vikings were denied by freshman JCJC keeper Michelle Brumfield of Mobile, Ala.
The Lady Bobcats then broke through when West Jones’ sophomore Bridget Dennis scored off an assist by George County sophomore Arlette Cochran at the 37th minute. Dennis took the pass and knocked it in the right corner of the goal.
Polk State scored in the 74th minute when Marcella Riveria scored off an assist by Emily Roebke. Polk State, 2-0-1, was ranked No. 1 in the nation at one point in 2009 and ended up making the NJCAA Tournament. The Vikings defeated Gulf Coast 1-0 on Friday and are scheduled to play Pearl River Sunday and Hinds Monday.
The Lady Bobcats are also 2-0-1 and travel to Hinds for a 5:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.
JCJC men win:
At Meridian, the Jones County Junior College Bobcats had an explosive day on the pitch here Saturday afternoon, whipping host host Meridian Community College Eagles, 6-3.
JCJC got two goals each from Weston, Fla., freshman Giuliano Mancini and Gautier sophomore Nick Peden and one goal each from Weston, Fla., freshman Manuel Ferrer and Clarkdale freshman Mason Tabb. Mancini and Ferrer each had a pair of assists, while Northwest Rankin sophomore Patrick Coates and Northwest Rankin freshman Jake Benton each had one assist.
JCJC is 2-1 and visit Hinds at 6 p.m. on Monday and host Holmes at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
