The Lauren Rogers Museum of Art was buzzing with activity this past week. More than 300 students on spring break visited LRMA with parents and grandparents to participate in a variety of fun educational art activities.
Beginning Tuesday, students enjoyed a free Spring Break Festival on the museum’s front lawn. The event featured animals from the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science and fun art projects including masking tape mosaics, solar prints, playing card paintings, beadwork and face painting. The Cowboy Blues Band provided endless entertainment.
Joe Magee, an outreach naturalist with the Mississippi Museum of National Science, was on hand to talk about animals native to Mississippi. He presented a few specimens including a snake, turtle, and fish.
“What we do is take a little of the museum of schools,” said Magee, whose coverage area encompasses all of Southeast Mississippi.
The skin of a bear which was poached is used for educational purposes by the science museum. Magee takes the skin to schools, along with videos, and teaches students about the animals natural habitat.
The week also included the LRMA Spring Break Art Break, Wednesday through Friday, for students in kindergarten through sixth grade. For a modest fee, students participated in a wide variety of printmaking, stuffed butterflies, mosaic plates, necklaces, and painting activities. Mandy Buchanan, LRMA Director of Education said, “We try to expose students to things they may not get the chance to do at school and are too messy to do at home.”

Boundaries
Just as each of us has a need for physical safety, we also have a need for emotional or psychological safety. Boundaries is the term we use to define what helps us feel safe and comfortable in relationships. We have all had the experience of feeling like another person was closer to us physically than was comfortable. So too it is important to define for yourself how close you want to be with others emotionally. Naturally, this varies with who the other person is.
