With the advancement of technology comes innovation in the way we do business, and the internet is a promising new frontier for the expanding enterprise. Seems like just about everybody has a website nowadays, and the library is no exception.
You can access the library’s website by going online to www.laurel.lib.ms.us. The home page lists hours of operation and phone numbers for the Laurel and Ellisville libraries. You’ll also find a listing of our most circulated items.
Our web page has a calendar of events which is updated monthly and keeps patrons abreast of the happenings here in the library — everything from storytime and special programs to holidays and closing dates.
Learn about our genealogy department, where you can obtain census information, death records and Laurel-Leader Call copies on microfilm dating back to 1902.
Not everyone has time to come in and hunt for items. Fact is, you don’t have to. From our home web page, click on “Search Online Catalog” and you’ll be instantly redirected to the Polaris PowerPAC website. Whether or not you have a library card, you can browse through books, videos, audios, large print novels, genealogical resources and more. Search both the Laurel and Ellisville collections simultaneously in one conveniently integrated database.
From there, library members can check the status of their account. Just click on “Patron Account” at the top of the page and enter your card number and password to log in. (Your password will either be ‘0000’ or the last four digits of your phone number.) Once you are logged in you have the option to change your password and, also, to maintain a permanent reading list. The reading list option allows you to keep a record of the items you check out on your card. If there’s a particular novel you read months ago that you can’t remember the title or author of, the reading list is a handy feature to help remind you. It also prevents avid readers from accidentally checking out the same books over and over again, which is actually a common occurrence.
You can view the items that you have out and their due dates. Hold requests are logged in your online account, too. Check the status of your held items. Suspend, cancel or reactivate any hold requests using Polaris. You can also track the number of renewals you have left on your items. Books and audios can be renewed twice. Materials can be renewed online or by calling the library. Items must be renewed on or before the due date to prevent patrons from incurring late fees. Polaris does allow you to view any fines and/or fees that you may have on your account. All charges are clearly itemized for you.
There are links to other resources, as well. You can go directly to the Learn-A-Test website and the Magnolia Database from our home page. Get detailed instructions on how to create your Learn-A-Test account and begin using the online exam tutorials. The Magnolia Database is funded by the Mississippi Legislature. It consists of Wilson biographies, NoveList, EBSCOhost etc., and you can access everything through our website. The Magnolia Database is a particularly effective tool for students who are composing research papers and other school projects.
Of course, any changes to your account can be made by library staff members. If you’d like for us to keep a record of your reading history, renew your books or place a hold on an item, you can simply call and let us know. We’ll be glad to assist you.
Our website can be accessed from any internet-capable computer. Patrons can also come in and look up their account using our public computers. This is another service that we provide in order to assist our many patrons. Check out the website. And if you don’t have a library card, stop by and sign up. There is no minimum age requirement and cards are free of charge for first-time applicants living in Jones County.
If you have questions you can contact the library at 601-428-4313. Albeit weeks in advance, I’d like to close by saying congratulations and best wishes to my coworkers, Steven and Brandi who will be tying the knot later this month. (I didn’t know how else to segue into this!) I’m so happy for you both!

Boundaries
Just as each of us has a need for physical safety, we also have a need for emotional or psychological safety. Boundaries is the term we use to define what helps us feel safe and comfortable in relationships. We have all had the experience of feeling like another person was closer to us physically than was comfortable. So too it is important to define for yourself how close you want to be with others emotionally. Naturally, this varies with who the other person is.
