JCJC opens with 34-3 rout of Delta

MOORHEAD — No. 19 Jones County Junior College opened the MACJC 2010 football season in convincing fashion, defeating host Mississippi Delta Community College 34-3 on Thursday night.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter before the host Trojans broke the ice with a 20-yard field goal 5 seconds before the end of the quarter.

JCJC led 17-3 at halftime.

Bobcat quarterback Tromarcus Toney passed for two touchdowns in the game, while running back PeAnthony Pickens added two more touchdown runs.

The Bobcats also received field goals from Dylan Sobiesk  from 25 and 49 yards out.

Toney was 19 of 29 passing in the game for 179 yards and the two touchdowns.

On the receiving end, Deuce Coon caught six passes for 57 yards.

Pickens rushed 17 times for 58 yards and the two scores.

Sobiesk put the Bobcats on the board at the 8:35 mark of the opening quarter with his 25-yard field goal.

At the 4:48 mark , Toney teamed up with Rashad Wynes for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Sobiesk added the point-after-touchdown conversion kick.

Leading 10-3, the Bobcats got on the scoreboard gain via Pickens’ 17-yard scamper with 7:28 before halftime. Sobiesk again added the PAT for the 17-3 lead at intermission.

 Calvin McDougal caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Toney  with 5:21 left in the third quarter. The Bobcats led 24-3 after Sobiesk added the PAT.

Sobiesk showed his strong leg minutes later with his 49-yard field goal with 1:17 left in the third quarter.

The lone score of the final quarter came when Pickens scampered in from 1-yard out with 5:11 left in the game. Sobiesk added the PAT.

For the game, the Bobcats amassed 331 total yards, including 34 rushes for 152 yards.

The JCJC defense showed its strength as it limited Mississippi Delta to a mere 80 yards rushing on 40 attempts.

The Trojans went to the airways for 148 yards. The Trojans had 228 total yards.

JCJC remains on the road for next week’s game. The Bobcats travel to Clarksdale to take on Coahoma Community College.

Jones plays its first home game on Sept. 18 against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. Three members will also be inducted into the JCJC Sports Hall of Fame the day before.
