ELLISVILLE — Ex-Bobcats Branch, Walker match up   

MINNEAPOLIS – A pair of former Jones County Junior College teammates were on opposing sidelines for Saturday’s NFL preseason game between the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings here at Mall of America Field.

Wide receiver Javon Walker, who signed with the Vikings on Tuesday of last week, caught a 25-yard scoring pass from backup quarterback Sage Rosenfels in the third quarter. Walker, who played at JCJC in 1998-99, ended the game with two receptions for 32 yards.

Wide receiver Deion Branch, who played for the Bobcats in 1997-98, had one catch for 42 yards for the Seahawks. Minnesota won the game, 24-13.

Both teams end the preseason on Thursday. The Vikings  host the Denver Broncos at 7 p.m., while the Seahawks visit the Oakland Raiders at 9 p.m.

 

‘Meet the Bobcats’ set Tuesday night

Football season is just around the corner, so it is time for the annual “Meet the Bobcats” event on the campus of Jones County Junior College.

“Meet the Bobcats” is at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Bobcat Stadium/Sim Cooley Field. Head coach Eddie Pierce and his JCJC football team, along with the coaching staff, will be introduced. The Bobcat cheerleaders and Maroon Typhoon marching band will be on hand to get the fans fired up about the 2010 season. The Maroon Typhoon will also have an exhibition following “Meet the Bobcats.”

Everyone is invited to come out and “Meet the Bobcats” as they get ready for their season opener, which takes place at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Mississippi Delta Community College.

“Meet the Bobcats” is free and is open to the public. In case of rain, the event will move to A.B. Howard Gymnasium.

 

JCJC Fall Softball Camp begins Oct. 21

The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats has its inaugural Fall League Softball Camp Oct. 21-Nov. 18 at the new Community Bank Park baseball/softball complex.

The camp will be for high school varsity players.

Second-year head coach Chris Robinson said the camp will begin with a skills clinic from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 21. This clinic will feature fundamentals and techniques will be reviewed by the JCJC coaching staff, along with Lady Bobcat players.

Games will then be played each Monday and Thursday from Oct. 25 through Nov. 18. Instruction will also be given during the games. The camp will be limited to the first 72 players that register. Each team in the league will consist of no more than 12 players to ensure playing time.

Cost for the camp is $75 per players and campers are asked to pre-register by Oct. 18.
