LAUREL —
The Braves of South Jones High School finally get their first game experience tonight.
And what an experience it will be when the Braves travel to Taylorsville to take on the Tartars, ranked No. 1 in the Jackson Clarion-Ledger 2A football poll.
Taylorsville comes into the game fresh off an 18-7 victory last week against the defending 4A State champion St. Stanislaus.
South Jones did not play last Friday because Biloxi High School cancelled the contest because of an outbreak of chicken pox.
South Jones head coach Cecil Hicks said that missing their first game was major.
“What it does is that we don’t have any game time conditioning and no opportunity to fix first game mistakes, and Taylorsville got to do all that,” Hicks said.
Tartars head coach Bud Blackledge said he thought the Braves would be ready to play.
“You always like to get the first game under your belt, but they (South Jones) are well coached and will be ready to play on Friday,” Blackledge said.
“South Jones had a good outing against Poplarville two weeks ago at their jamboree,” Blackledge said. “I feel bad for the guys because they didn’t get to play and won’t get that chance back.”
Both coaches said that they are approaching the week as just another normal week.
“You don’t change what you do, you just prepare for Taylorsville like it’s our Week One game, which it basically is for us,” Hicks said. “Taylorsville is very well-coached and it’s like playing a big 4A program. They’re sound fundamentally and have lots of team speed.”
Game time is set for 7:30.
