TAYLORSVILLE — It was for the South State 2A Championship here at Tartar Stadium in Taylorsville Friday night between the Taylorsville Tartars and the Bassfield Yellowjackets.
In the end, it was Bassfield taking the game over the Tartars with a big second half as they downed the Tartars 33-10.
In the first quarter, Taylorsville struck first with a 30-yard field goal by Cameron Henderson as the Tartars took a 3-0 lead. Bassfield then scored near the end of the first quarter as quarterback Carvy McKee went in from a yard out to take a 7-3 lead. The drive covered 62 yards in 10 plays.
In the second quarter, Bassfield scored again as Josh Myers scored on an 8-yard run at the 9:37 mark to give Bassfield a 14-3 lead. Taylorsville then closed out the scoring in the first half as Dominique Sullivan threw a touchdown pass to Will Harrison to make the score 14-10 at halftime.
The second half was all Bassfield as the Yellowjackets scored on a 50-yard touchdown run straight up the Taylorsville sideline. The point after was no good, but Bassfield held a 20-10 lead. Bassfield then later scored on a 20-yard run up the middle at the 1:24 mark of the third quarter to give Bassfield a 27-10 lead. On the ensuing kickoff, the Tartars fumbled at midfield, and the Yellowjackets recovered. Then on that possession in the fourth quarter Bassfield scored on a 1-yard run by Myers to close out the scoring with a 33-10 victory.
Bassfield had 350 yards rushing in the contest as they ran the ball 41 times. The Yellowjackets had 110 yards of offense through the air. Taylorsville had 30 yards on the ground, and 131 yards through the air as Sullivan was 9-of-22.
Taylorsville ends the year with an impressive record of 11-3, while Bassfield will meet Ackerman, a 21-6 winner over West Bolivar in the North State Championship, for the 2A title next weekend.

STATE CHAMPIONS
The Laurel Knight Hawks captured the Mississippi Christian Home Educators (MCHE) state basketball championship Monday in Jackson. In the final game of the double elimination tournament, the Knight Hawks defeated the two year reigning state champions, Jackson Victors, with a final score of 67-64.
