Last week, the Wayne County War Eagles beat the West Jones Mustangs 38-21 in a rematch game in Waynesboro. In the Alabama High School Athletic Association, the game would have been played in SoSo.
In the AHSAA, if two teams from the same region meet in the playoffs the team with the higher seed gets to host the opponent. In this case, West Jones would've got to host Wayne County instead of the Mustangs traveling to Waynesboro again.
I believe winning the region crown should mean more than just giving a team the title "region champ". By changing the current rule to this format, I believe teams would fight harder competing for the region crown.
In the NFL, it works this way. The team with the best record at the end of the season has home field advantage throughout the playoffs. For example, if the Saints keep on winning like they are then they would have home field all the way to the NFC Championship game.
This is just something the MHSAA needs to think about.
Favorite Egg Bowl memories
On Nov. 23, 2007, Mississippi State trailed Ole Miss 14-0 with 8:08 left in the final quarter. The Bulldogs scored 17 straight points to beat the Rebels on that day. The win got the Bulldogs an invite to the Liberty Bowl where they beat the UCF Knights 10-3.
By the way, I happen to know the fella who has the winning field goal ball from that game.
Another fond memory is the 2005 edition of the Egg Bowl. In that game, Jerious Norwood rushed for three touchdowns and had over 150 yards on the day to beat the Rebels in Starkville, 35-14.
Giving Thanks
I've often wondered about turkey sales. The one day out of the year turkey sales goes through the roof is the day before Thanksgiving. Turkey is certainly not the most tastiest meat in the world, but one day out of the year Americans go to the grocery store to try to find the best bird available.
I mean, how many other days of the year do you hear someone say, "It’s time to go get some turkey?"
For one day of the year and many days following, turkey will be the choice meat on everyone's kitchen table.
Besides from turkey, one thing I'm thankful for this year is family. There's something pretty incredible about family you can't get from anyone else. When your hurt, family seems to be there to help you out. When your down, family is there to cheer you up.
The biggest thing I'm thankful for this Thanksgiving season is family, and I know I don't say it a whole lot. I just want to let my family know how much I appreciate them by saying thank you for all the things you've done for me this past year.
