Lady Bobcats avenge only loss of season

Bobcats fall to Alabama Southern

ELLISVILLE – It was a night for revenge here Monday at Bobcat Gym.

The Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats avenged their only loss from earlier in the season with a 59-53 victory over Alabama Southern Community College. ASCC had beaten Jones 64-62 in overtime on Nov. 12 in Monroeville.

In the men's game, the visiting Eagles also avenged their only defeat of the year, beating the Bobcats, 88-81. Alabama Southern's only loss of the season was on Nov. 12 by an 81-78 score to the Bobcats.

Next up for JCJC will be home action vs. East Mississippi Community College on Monday, Nov. 30. The women's game tips off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m. Fans can listen to the games at www.jcjc.tv with Lance Pittman calling the play-by-play and Mark Easley providing commentary.

Lady Bobcats 59, Lady Lions 53

Jones led by as many as 11 points, but the Lady Eagles never went away.

Trailing 54-52 with less than two minutes to play, Alabama Southern had a chance to tie, but turned the ball over. Brigit Taylor's rebound basket gave the Lady Bobcats a 56-52 lead with 1:24 left.

The Lady Eagles then turned it over again, but JCJC did as well.

ASCC's Jarra Arnold converted a free throw with :28.6 left to make it 56-53. She missed the second shot, Taylor grabbed the rebound and drew the foul. Taylor hit a free throw to put Jones up 57-53 with :27.5 left.

After a miss by ASCC's Amber Johnson, Taylor grabbed another rebound and was fouled with :16.3 seconds left. She made one shot to give Jones a 58-53 lead. Tanecka Carey's free throw with :05.7 seconds left closed the scoring.

Jones, 5-1, received 16 points from Erica Moore, 15 from Taylor and 10 from Dominique Evans. Taylor and Lee each had eight rebounds, as the Lady Bobcats outrebounded Alabama Southern, 37-32.

The Lady Eagles, 2-5, got 17 points from Arnold.

Eagles 88, Bobcats 81

It was a wild contest in which Jones had four players foul out and was charged with 33 fouls, including three technicals. There were also 20 lead changes on the night, including 13 in the second half.

Down 42-38, the Bobcats came out quickly in the second half. They used a 24-11 run to start the half and took their longest lead of the night at 62-53 with 13:01 left when Nic Combs scored.

But the Eagles then used a 15-2 run of their own and went up 68-64 with 10:31 left when Brenton Butler scored.

The Bobcats fought back and would eventually take their final lead of the game at 77-76 with 5:00 left when Combs hit a pair of free throws.

ASCC then score eight straight points and went up 84-77 with 1:16 remaining when Butler, a 6-foot-11, 245-pound center, slammed the ball home.

Kadeem Fleming hit a 3-pointer for Jones with 1:05 left, but that would be the final field goal of the game for the Bobcats.

Kendrick McDonald led Jones, 3-3, with 18 points. Combs added 17, Brandon Wilson had 16 points and Kelly added 13.

Sanders had 29 points for the Eagles, 8-1, including a perfect 10-for-10 night at the free throw line. Farmer added 16 and Nick Watkins had 14.
