BAY SPRINGS — The South Jones Braves opened up a 10-0 lead on Bay Springs here Thursday night, and led by as much as 24 points, but had to hang on for a 79-71 victory over the Bulldogs.
“We played well, but we didn’t play smart at the end,” said South Jones coach Casey Price. “We need to be more focused on foul shots at the end of games.”
The Braves led 15-6 at the end of the first quarter 15-6 and held a 39-22 advantage at the half. The Braves got ahead 51-28 at the 5:00 mark of the third quarter and led 58-42 after three quarters. But the Bulldogs would start to close the gap with 2:34 left at 71-60 on Demond Hughes’s bucket that made it 76-66, but South held on for the win.
Dovantis Lewis led the Braves with 28 points, followed by Zack Carter with 23 points.
The Bulldogs were led by Johnathan Duckworth with 24 points, followed by Demond Hughes with 15 points and Steve Payton chipped in 13 points.
The Braves had 32 points in the paint to the Bulldogs 40 points. The Braves were 5-14 from beyond the arc and the Bulldogs were 1-3.
Lady Bulldogs 56, Lady Braves 52
In the girls game, Bay Springs downed the Lady Braves by the score of 56-52.
London Thomas led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points, followed by Casey McCurdy with 15 points and Shumond Hughes with 8 points. Keosha Wilson led the Lady Braves with 21 points, followed by Anna Kate Cowart ,who came off the bench to score 11 points in the losing effort for the Lady Braves.
The Lady Braves had 22 points in the paint to the Bulldogs 18 points. South Jones was 3-15 from behind the 3-point line as the Bulldogs were 4-7. South Jones had 9 steals in the game, and the Bulldogs had 6 steals.
The Lady Bulldogs led 19-14 after the first quarter, and 30-22 at the half. Bay Springs led 41-38 at the end of the third quarter and held on for the 56-52 win.
“We played well as a team, and the defense was great. We played unselfish basketball in this game,” said Bay springs coach Danielle Busby.
South Jones will be back in action on Dec. 1st and Bay Springs will be back in action next week in the Heidelberg Tournament.

STATE CHAMPIONS
The Laurel Knight Hawks captured the Mississippi Christian Home Educators (MCHE) state basketball championship Monday in Jackson. In the final game of the double elimination tournament, the Knight Hawks defeated the two year reigning state champions, Jackson Victors, with a final score of 67-64.
