T’ville, Mize win playoffs

The Taylorsville Tartars won easily in their first round playoff game over Hinds AHS Friday, 39-8.

In the first quarter after both teams traded possessions the Tartars got on the board at the 2:30 mark as Deion Fairley took a handoff, and went five yards for a touchdown the pat was no good, but the Tartars led 6-0.

In the second quarter Taylorsville struck again this time at the 10:01 mark with a 7 play drive that took 3:00 minutes off the clock as Jarvis Nixon scored on a 1 yard run the pat was good, and the Tartars led 13-0. The Tartars then blocked a Hinds punt at the 13 yard line giving Taylorsville the ball at the 13 yard line. The next play quarterback Domique Sullivan tossed a touchdown pass to Fernando Hamilton the pat was no good, and the Tartars led 19-0. The Tartars then scored at the end of the first half after a Hinds fumble at the 4:54 mark as Sullivan passed to Kendrick Ross for the score the pat was good, and the Tartars took a 26-0 lead to the locker room in a game they would go on to win 39-8.

In another playoff game the Mize Bulldogs won their playoff opener as they downed the Wesson Cobras by the score of 28-14. With Mize leading 14-7 at halftime the Bulldogs drove the field, and got close to the endzone, but quarterback Devin Burch threw an interception in the end zone to stall the drive. On the ensuing drive the Cobras fumbled at their own 30 yard line giving Mize excellent field position. Burch then hit Receiver Chavez Sims on a 27 yard pass play to the 2 yard line setting up a 2 yard touchdown run by Brad Blackwell at the 4:46 mark of the quarter covering 30 yards on the drive to give the Bulldogs a 21-7 lead after three quarters. Wesson then found some rhythm as they scored on a 5 yard touchdown pass on a 4th and goal play with 10:20 left to play to cut the lead to 21-14 Mize. The Bulldogs would come right back on a 2 play drive as Burch hit Chavez Sims on a slant pattern, and Sims raced 65 yards for the score to make it 28-14 Mize with 9:36 left in the game as the Bulldogs went on to win 28-14. “Last week we just didnt play against Taylorsville, and to come out and play like this tonight is very pleasing.” said Mize quarterback Devin Burch. “Chavez made two great catches in the second half I just threw him the ball, and he did the rest.”Mize with the win moves to 8-3 on the year. “Chavez is an important part of our game plan they were focusing on him, but to see him have a nice game was important,” said Mize coach Kenny Robinson. The Bulldogs will be on the road next week against Scott Central or East Marion.
