TAYLORSVILLE — The Taylorsville Tartars claimed the Region 7-2A Championship with a 34-12 thrashing of cross-county rival Mize Saturday in a game that was rescheduled from Friday due to severe weather. With the win, the Tartars will host Hinds AHS Friday in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs. The Bulldogs host Wesson in the opening round.
Twenty seconds into the game, Southern Miss commitment Dominique Sullivan connected with Rodregue Ducksworth on a post pattern for an 80 yard TD. Cameron Henderson's PAT was no good, and the Tartars led 6-0.
With 9:49 left in the half, Sullivan hit Marcus Mayers in the back of the end-zone for the quick score after a 5-play drive which started at the Mize 8 yard-line. The drive was set up after the Tartars defense picked off a Davin Burch pass at the Bulldog 38 yard-line. Henderson added the extra point, and Taylorsville led 13-0.
The Bulldogs got into Tartar territory when Burch faked a punt, and ran the ball down to the Tartar 13 yard line for a 68 yard run. Ryan McCullum ran the ball in from two yards out to close out a 8-play drive that started at the Bulldog 31 yard-line.
The Tartars answered when back-up quarterback Fernando Hamilton hit Martez Nixon down the sideline from 30 yards out. Henderson's PAT was good, and Taylorsville took a 20-6 lead into halftime.
With 8:54 left in the third quarter, Jarvis Nixon scored from two yards out after a 10-play drive that started at the Mize 39 yard-line. Henderson's PAT was no good, and the Tartars took a 26-6 lead.
After a Mize punt, Hamilton took the ball 50 yards the other way with 4:24 left in the third quarter. Henderson's PAT was no good, and the Tartars led 32-6.
With 11:56 left in the game, Brad Blackwell scored from two yards out for Mize. The 2-point conversion attempt was no good, and the Bulldogs trailed 32-12.
Garrett Boykin and Willie Griffith added the final points on the board for Taylorsville with a sack in the end-zone with 8:32 left in the game to make your final 34-12.
With the win, Taylorsville improves to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in Region 7-2A. Mize finishes the regular season at 7-4 and 3-1 in Region 7-2A.
In other Region 7-2A playoff action, Enterprise travels to Loyd Star Friday, while Bay Springs hits the road to Puckett.
