In front of a crowd estimated to be over 7,000 fans, the 45th renewal of the Northeast Jones-West Jones game took place at Northeast Thursday night at the “Jungle.” In a close game decided by two missed extra points, the West Jones Mustangs beat the Northeast Jones Tigers 13-12.
After driving down the field from their own 23-yard line, Tiger quarterback Alec Barlow connected with Corvell Harrison from 8 yards out to put the Tigers ahead of the Mustangs 6-0 with 3:06 left in the first quarter. Cole Byrd’s extra point was no good.
After a scoreless second quarter, Barlow reached the end zone from five yards out on a quarterback keeper with 1:34 left in the third quarter. West Jones stuffed Gary Newell in the backfield on a two-point conversion attempt. The Tigers led 12-0.
Trailing Northeast 12-0 going into the fourth quarter, the Mustangs drove the ball from midfield down to the Tiger 3-yardline. Devontay Barnett pushed the ball across the goal line for the Mustangs’ first score of the game with 10:52 left in the final quarter. Hunter Estess added the extra point, and the Mustangs trailed 12-7.
After a few runs by Barnett that put West Jones at the Tiger 24-yardline, Ben Stevens tossed the ball to Xavier Hilton for the Mustangs’ final score of the game. A two-point conversion failed.
West Jones travels to Magee Friday night, while Northeast hosts Wayne County.
