Laurel’s Golden Tornadoes split a pair of weekend baseball games.
On Friday, 4A Laurel beat 6A rival Hattiesburg 9-2. On Saturday, the Tornadoes fell to visiting 6A Petal 15-4.

In the first inning, Petal went up 2-0 when Anthony Alford and Taylor Graves had RBI.
In the top of the second inning, Chase Toussaint had an RBI single. Cody Conkle followed with a two-run RBI. Brandon Smith had a two-run RBI to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead.
Petal’s Taylor Byrd had an RBI single in the third. Alford added another RBI to his credit to give Petal a 9-0 advantage.
Laurel’s Deion Ulmer got the home team on the board with an RBI single to right field to make it 9-1.
Petal’s Ethan McLeod, Taylor Guyce, and Toussaint had RBIs in the top of the fourth. Byrd hit a two run homer, followed by an Alford solo home run to give the Panthers a 15-1 lead.
In the Laurel fourth, Mac Carmichael had an RBI single, while Markel Milsap had a two-run single to make the final score of 15-4.
Laurel head coach Jordan Rogers said he welcomed the tough competition.
“We have played a tough schedule for a reason,” Rogers said. “When you play these tough teams you only get better.”
Dontreal Pruitt took the loss for Laurel, while Conkle earned the win for Petal.

Laurel 9, Hattiesburg 2
Laurel beat the Hattiesburg Tigers 9-2 on Friday night at Smokey Herrington Field.
Pruitt led the way in the winning effort by hitting a home run and single. Eli Morris and Daniel Attaway had RBI singles in the game.
Pitcher William Bender went the distance for Laurel.
Rogers was thrilled to get a big win over a traditionally tough baseball program like Hattiesburg.
“Hattiesburg is a traditional power in baseball,” Rogers said. “Anytime you can get a win over a team like Hattiesburg, it’s a big one.”

STATE CHAMPIONS
The Laurel Knight Hawks captured the Mississippi Christian Home Educators (MCHE) state basketball championship Monday in Jackson. In the final game of the double elimination tournament, the Knight Hawks defeated the two year reigning state champions, Jackson Victors, with a final score of 67-64.
