The Jones County Junior College Bobcats will take another long trip to the Delta this week.
The Bobcats, who moved up from 19th to 11th in this week’s NJCAA poll, will travel to Clarksdale to take on the Coahoma Community College Tigers at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. JCJC went to Moorhead last week and thumped Mississippi Delta Community College, 34-3, in the opener.
Bobcat head coach Eddie Pierce was pleased with his team’s performance.
“You are always pleased to win that first one,” he said. “The kids buy in to what you are saying and that’s a good thing. We had a real physical camp in preseason and our kids were ready to play.”
JCJC had several standout performances.
Sophomore quarterback Tromarcus Toney, in his first game as a Bobcat, was 19-of-29 through the air for 179 yards and two touchdowns, while freshman running back DeAnthony Pickens rushed 17 times for 58 yards and a pair of scores. Freshman wide receiver Deuce Coon had six catches for 57 yards, while freshmen wideouts Rashad Wynes and Calvin McDougle each had touchdown receptions.
On defense, the Bobcats held the Trojans to just 80 yards on the ground and 228 yards of offense. JCJC had two big stops inside their own 10-yard line, limiting the Trojans to one field goal and blocking another attempt. And on special teams, Oak Grove freshman Dylan Sobiesk made field goals of 25 and 49 yards and was 4-of-4 on extra points, while punter Slater Smith averaged 49 yards a boot on two kicks.
“Tromarcus did a good job and I am really proud of him,” said Pierce. “We threw the ball well, we caught the ball well and our running backs ran hard. We did well in special teams. The things you want to be good at doing we were able to do well the other night. I was really happy with the way our squad played.”
Coahoma, led by veteran coach Freeman Horton, made the playoffs for the first time in school history last year. The Tigers were ranked No. 25 in the preseason poll, but dropped a 33-6 decision to Co-Lin in the season opener.
Pierce said Coahoma was in last week’s game vs. the Wolves, but hurt themselves with some errors in the second half.
“They made some first-game mistakes that kind of put them in a bind and they could not overcome that,” he said. “It was 10-6 going into the third quarter and they snapped the ball over the quarterback’s head and they snapped it over the punter’s head.
“They made some mistakes that hurt them and Co-Lin was able to capitalize on those mistakes.”
The Tigers are led by quarterback Garrick Jones, of Whitehaven, running backs Courtney Vaughn, of Rosa Fort and Artavis Gregory, of Fairley, Ala., and wide receivers Hollis Moore II, of Whitehaven, Rishunn McCaleb, of Gentry, Martin Robinson, of Coahoma AHS, and Devon Perry, of Memphis.
They are led on defense by ends Ceasare Johnson, of Memphis, Charles Harris, of Charleston and Whitehaven’s Napoleon Brewer.
Pierce expects the homestanding Tigers to present a challenge for the Bobcats this week.
“Coahoma has a good football team and they will play better,” he said. “We had better be ready to play when we get there.”
Thursday’s game will air (audio only) on www.jcjc.tv and on WGDQ-FM, 93.1, with Lance Pittman on play-by-play and Mark Easley providing commentary. Airtime is 6 p.m.
Next week, the Bobcats begin South Division play at home against tNo. 3 Gulf Coast. Kickoff is 7 p.m. on Sept. 18.
