Workshop deals with health issues

ELLISVILLE — Keeping up to date on rules, regulations and health issues was the subject of the Jones County Junior College HPR (Health, Physical Education and Recreation) Professional Development Workshop recently on campus.

JCJC coaches were in attendance at the workshop, which was organized by athletic director Katie Herrington.

“We covered some topics that needed to be addressed,” said Herrington. “The health related issues are important to all of us and our coaches needed to be together to share that information.”

The workshop included several speakers, including Hattiesburg Clinic athletic trainer Gary Stroud and JCJC head athletic trainer Joel Cain. Stroud covered several topics including CPR, exertional heat illness, staph infection and sickle cell. JCJC Academic Dean Shannon Campbell discussed eligibility, while Director of Admissions and Records Rick Hamilton talked about the new rules regarding the enrollment of foreign athletes.

Director of Financial Aid Jennifer Suber and assistant director Juanita Morgan briefed the coaches on applying for financial aid for the student-athletes, while Gwen Magee, Director of the JCJC Student Success Center, told the coaches how much her department could help them when it came to tutoring and mentoring their players.

“Financial aid is changing and a lot of our athletes are affected by that,” said Herrington. “This is the first year we have been able to admit foreign athletes to JCJC and we needed to know about that.  The Student Success Center is relatively new and our coaches need to know exactly what they offer so they can utilize it.”

Herrington completed the workshop by discussing eligibility requirements for the student-athletes and graduation requirements for those student-athletes wishing to attend Southeastern Conference, Conference USA and other NCAA Division I, Division II and NAIA schools.

“I think the session went very well,” said Herrington. “We accomplished the goals we were trying to achieve. We are very appreciative of everyone who came by and spoke at the session.”

The workshop took place on the morning of July 27 in the Media Center of the Terrell Tisdale Library on the JCJC campus.
