Wayne County’s winning streak ended at 14 games after the War Eagles suffered a 59-57 overtime loss to McComb Friday night in the South Mississippi 5A Boys Tournament at the McComb gym.
Wayne County saw its season come to an end with a 24-3 record. Before Friday, Wayne County’s last loss was Dec. 28 in an 80-63 defeat to Jackson Provine.
Regulation ended with the teams tied 50-50.
After the first quarter, Wayne County led 14-10, but the War Eagles were-out-scored 16-3 in the second quarter and trailed 26-17 at halftime. The War Eagles rallied to get within 37-35 after the third quarter.
Donta Pittman, Rayford Worsham and Detric Davis all scored 12 points for Wayne County. Marcus Slater added 8 points.
For McComb, 26-5, TraDarrius Holloway and Ladarrius White both scored 14 points.
In the South State 3A Tournament at Choctaw Central, Heidelberg’s boys were eliminated by Forest after a 73-60 loss. Heidelberg trailed 30-24 at halftime after being out-scored 19-9 in the second quarter.
Kevin Nixon’s 20 points paced the Oilers. Oliver Stevens and Tyrone Strickland scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.
“We started out well, but we just executed poorly. Forest had two big rebounders about 6-foot-5 and 6-foot-6, and one of them went down in the second quarter,” Heidelberg coach Ted Williams said. “What we’d planned for them didn’t materialize as they got smaller and quicker on us and we didn’t adjust. Their point guard took over the game.”
DaTodrick Pinkston’s 21 points and Lavadius Lyles’ 18 points paced Forest.
Heidelberg’s girls advanced with a 47-38 victory over Carthage at Franklin County.
The Lady Oilers (18-7) received 13 points from Eureeka Carr, 12 points from Kayla Barber and 10 from Arissa McDonald. Brianna Kennedy scored 7 points.
Heidelberg played Franklin County in Saturday’s semifinals. The finals are scheduled for Monday at 7:30 p.m.
In the 2A Girls South State Tournament at Bay Springs, the host Lady Bulldogs were eliminated 66-54 by Scott Central,.
Kelcia Bufkin of Scott Central scored a game high 25 points, followed by Victoria Vivians with 24 points in the victory.
Bay Springs (19-7) was led by Miranda Agee with 17 points, and Shumond Hughes added 15 points.
“I’m proud of my girls for their efforts this year, and some of these seniors will be playing college basketball next year,” said Coach Danielle Busby.

The Laurel Knight Hawks captured the Mississippi Christian Home Educators (MCHE) state basketball championship Monday in Jackson. In the final game of the double elimination tournament, the Knight Hawks defeated the two year reigning state champions, Jackson Victors, with a final score of 67-64.
