Golden Eagles baseball hitting their stride

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss won their fourth consecutive game with a 6-2 win to close out the Coca-Cola Classic vs. Cal St. Northridge Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.

“This was a good weekend for us,” head coach Corky Palmer said. “We pitched well all weekend long and hit enough to win all three games”.

The Golden Eagles (10-6) scored five runs in the first three innings and that would be plenty for Josh Billeaud to pick up his first Golden Eagles win. He threw five and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out six and walking one. Wade Weathers threw a perfect two and one-third innings, striking out three to finish the game.

“Josh threw a lot of strikes today and stayed ahead of hitters which is a good formula for success,” Palmer said. “I also like the way Weathers threw today and all weekend, other that one bad inning this year he has been outstanding.”

Trey Sutton, Brian Dozier and Corey Stevens lead the offensive attack for the Golden Eagles. Sutton had three hits with a run scored, Dozier added in two hits with a run scored and a RBI and Corey Stevens stayed hot since entering the starting lineup with a two hit and two RBI afternoon.

The game was called after eight innings, due to the preset travel curfew so Cal State Northridge could catch their flight home.

Southern Miss loaded the bases in the bottom of the first after Brian Dozier and Trey Sutton led off the game with back-to back singles to right field and Kyle Maxie drew a walk. Trey Cuevas followed with a ground ball that Northridge third baseman Ryan Pineda over threw trying to start a double-play at second base allowing Dozier and Sutton to score and Cuevas to reach first.

The Golden Eagles added another run in the second to increase their lead to 3-0. Josh Fields singles hit a soft single to right field and came around to score on Brian Dozier’s double to left-center field.

Southern Miss scored for the third consecutive inning in the bottom of the third adding two unearned runs to extend their lead to 5-0. Cuevas hit a deep fly ball that Northridge left fielder Richard Cates dropped allowing Cuevas to reach second base. Drew Carson followed with a single to right field, putting runners on the corner.

Anthony Doss picked up RBI on a slow rolling ground out scoring Cuevas from third base. Corey Stevens followed with an RBI single to right field scoring Carson from second base.

Cal St. Northridge cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Southern Miss lead to 5-1. Catcher John Parham singled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by CJ Belanger.

Trey Cuevas walked to lead off the fifth inning and came around to score on Corey Stevens RBI single, giving the Golden Eagles a 6-1 advantage.

Southern Miss will return to action in non-conference play with a home match up Tuesday against Southeastern Louisiana and a road game at Louisiana Monroe.

The Golden Eagles will open conference play this weekend as they will host No. 20 UCF who is currently 15-1.
