SOSO - In already the second matchup between Wayne County and West Jones early in the fast pitch softball season, the visiting Lady War Eagles won a close one on Monday.
Wayne County was a 7-4 winner over West Jones. With the victory, Wayne County improved to 4-1 on the season. The homestanding Lady Mustangs dropped to 4-3 overall on the season.
Wayne County beat the Lady Mustangs 14-6 on Saturday in a tournament at Raleigh High School.
Wayne County head fast pitch softball coach Eric Neel said he believes there is no better rivalry than Wayne County and West Jones.
“It’s a great rivalry,” Neel said. “It gives our girls something to look forward to during the season. West Jones is a quality team, and every time you play them, it’s going to be a battle.”
In Monday’s contest, the Lady Mustangs dented the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in the first inning.
West Jones’ Jessmar Walters singled to drive in Mackie Rayner for the first Lady Mustang run. That was followed by Lindsey Jones hitting into a fielder’s choice that forced in Walters for a 2-0 advantage.
Wayne County answered in the top of the second inning with two runs of its own to tie the game at 2-2.
Wayne County’s Jade Albritton singled to center field and drove in Katie Bunch for the Lady War Eagles’ first run of the inning. Shalaria Pickens then hit into a fielder’s choice for the second out of the inning. to drive in the second run of the inning. On the play, Laken Singkleton came across to score and knot the game at 2-2 heading into the third inning.
Wayne County then went up 3-2 in the third inning.
Lady War Eagles’ Paxton Luke singled to left center to drive in Megan Cook from third base.
West Jones rallied for a run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Kelly Gavin tied the game at 3-3 when she crossed home on a Wayne County error following a strikeout. In an attempt to catch the runner going to first, the ball was overthrown at first base.
Wayne County took the lead for good in the fifth frame.
Cook put the Lady War Eagles in the lead at 4-3 when she came home on a passed ball to give the Lady War Eagles a 4-3 advantage in the top of the fifth inning.
Wayne County maintained the pressure in the sixth inning.
Cook doubled to center field to bring home Albritton and Perkins. Albritton reached via a single, while Perkins walked. Singleton added the final run of the game for the Lady War Eagles with a sacrifice fly to bring home LaCortia McFarland for a 7-3 advantage. McFarland reached base via a walk.
In the final inning of play,West Jones scored a single run. Walters singled to center field to score Rayner.
“We played a good team in Wayne County,” West Jones coach Tabitha Sharplin. “Wayne County is one of the better teams in this area. When you play better teams, you’re going to get better.”
Paxton Luke was the winning pitcher. The loss went to Lindsay Jones.

The Laurel Knight Hawks captured the Mississippi Christian Home Educators (MCHE) state basketball championship Monday in Jackson. In the final game of the double elimination tournament, the Knight Hawks defeated the two year reigning state champions, Jackson Victors, with a final score of 67-64.
