Billy Hamilton (left) of Taylorsville is playing professional baseball the Sarasota Reds, a minor league of the Cincinnatti Reds, in Sarasota, Fla. Hamilton was taken by the Reds in Major League Baseball’s recent amature draft. He was selected 57th overall. At Taylorsville High School Hamilton won all-state honors in football, basketball and baseball and had signed with Mississippi State as a wide receiver. His cousin, Darrian Hamilton (right), a centerfielder at Taylorsville High, was drafted in the later rounds by Cincinnati and has scholarship offers to play baseball with Jones Junior College and William Carey College if Cincinnati fails to sign him by August 15. Like his cousin, he was a three-sport standout. Billy Hamiltion’s agent is Nick Crawford (standing) of Greenville.

Lady Braves in title game
The South Jones Lady Braves will meet their old nemesis Wayne County here Friday night at 6 p.m. in the finals of the Region 5-5A basketball tournament. South Jones downed county rival West Jones while Wayne County came away with an impressive win over Stone County here Tuesday night.

The Laurel Knight Hawks captured the Mississippi Christian Home Educators (MCHE) state basketball championship Monday in Jackson. In the final game of the double elimination tournament, the Knight Hawks defeated the two year reigning state champions, Jackson Victors, with a final score of 67-64.
