Hampton makes Laurel campaign stop

Libertarian candidate for 4th Congressional seat

LAUREL — Hattiesburg resident Tim Hampton made a campaign stop in Laurel Tuesday as he challenges for the 4th Congressional District seat currently held by U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor (D-Miss.).

Hampton, a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, is a third party candidate representing the Libertarian Party of Mississippi. Other candidates include State Rep. Steven Palazzo (R-Biloxi). Hattiesburg resident Anna Jewel Revies of the Reform Party was taken off the ballot Wednesday after a vote by the Board of Election Commissioners.

Hampton was a guest of the Mississippi 9-12 Reclaimers, which held a meeting at Western Sizzlin.

Hampton, 26, said he decided to get involved in the race after following Taylor’s voting record.

“What he says and what message comes across are two different things,” he said. “Knowing what the landscape would look like for this election, I thought people needed a choice on the ballot.

“I am someone that I could vote for,” Hampton added. “We needed someone to stand up and be a real people’s choice and really be a uniter.”

Hampton said he espouses the Libertarian Party because “it’s about having the responsibility to make your own choices.”

“It’s about standing up for people before party,”  he said. “I don’t vote the party line. I vote based on people rather than party, and the Libertarian Party embodies that.”

Hampton said he also chose to run as a Libertarian because it was “too easy” to fall into the mold of a Republican or Democrat.

“I believe in not overspending,” he said. “What troubled me about Palazzo until recently was that he was $32,000 in debt with $26,000 cash in hand.

“If you’re going to preach the message of limited government and fiscal responsibility, you shouldn’t be overspending and going into debt,” Hampton added.

Hampton and his wife, Maggie, also are new parents of a newborn girl, Abah, who was born just two weeks ago.

“It feels amazing, but it’s scary too,” he said. “It also strengthens my resolve and gives me something to really fight for. She is someone who is not yet able to stand up for themselves.”

Hampton works as a customer support specialist for MegaGate Broadband, Inc.

Sharon Howard, founder of the Mississippi 9-12 Reclaimers, said the group exists “to educate the public on our Constitution and the 9 principles and 12 values outlined in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.”

Also as part of the program was Jennifer West, president of 9-12 Hattiesburg.
