Family, friends and supporters of the Pleasant Ridge Volunteer Fire Department gave blood in memory of a fallen firefighter Saturday.
Firefighter Sally Renee’ Clark, wife of Pleasant Ridge Fire Chief Billy Earl Clark, died of a heart attack following a fire department training in April of 2005. She was 49 years old.
“She started this blood drive and the department decided that it should be done in her memory,” said Clark. “This is actually our eighth year doing this.”
Each year, the blood drive has averaged about 30 to 40 units of blood. He said he appreciates the support of the community.
By noon, more than 20 people had signed up to donate blood. However, some had “A positive” blood type and were turned away because United Blood Services has an overstock of “A positive” blood.
The blood drive was held in partnership with United Blood Services.
“We were given credit for those with A positive blood,” said Clark. “This is a community blood drive and we want anyone from the community to be able to get blood when they need it.”
Sarah Stonefield, 19, a freshman at Jones County Junior College, was among those donating blood Saturday. She said she wanted to do it to help save lives.
Her mom, Darlene Stonefield, was there to offer moral support to her daughter, who was a little uneasy about the process. But, Sarah was described as a “trooper” by those working the blood drive.
“Many of those who are giving blood are members of our children or people who knew my wife,” explained Clark. “I appreciate them so much.
“We miss Sally,” Clark said. “She really believe in Christ and was involved in a lot of work at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. She was a special lady.”
