BAY SPRINGS – The City of Bay Springs has developed a plan that would allow more efficient use of the city’s parks.
Bay Springs Mayor J.E. Smith said the city has enacted an ordinance regarding the use of city parks.
The city’s Board of Aldermen approved the ordinance during its December meeting. It became effective in January.
According to the new ordinance, organizations wishing to use any city park or facility for an event must consult city officials at city hall.
Smith said the park is still available for public use anytime. However, special events have to coordinated.
Laura Carden of Little Rock, Ark. and her children enjoyed time at City Park in Bay Springs this week.
Carden and her three children – Anna, 6; Hope, 3; Jack, 1 – took advantage of the nice weather by spending time at the park.
City Park, which is across from Bay Springs City Hall, is one of four parks in the Jasper County municipality.
Smith said the city’s four parks are Smith Park, which is located downtown on Highway 528; City Park; Spring Park also known as Alderman Park, which is located at the intersection of Highways 15 and 18; and Nix Pavillion, which is located behind city hall.
Under the new ordinance, organizations will be issued a permit from City Hall. Officials said this should avoid any conflicts concerning use of the facilities.
“Historically, we have not required a permit for individuals or organizations to use the city’s parks for any organized event,” the mayor said. “We have a lot of groups conducting reunions, weddings and birthday parties.”
Smith said the new guideline is not designed to discourage people from using the parks, but has been established to make sure that those going to the parks will be able to enjoy their events.
Officials said the permit also ensures the group with the permit exclusive access to the park.
Smith said there is still no fees for the use of the parks. Anyone wanting more information about the use of the parks can call City Hall at (601) 764-4112.
