LAUREL —
The Jones County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on it’s budget for the 2011 Fiscal Year at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Jones County residents will have an opportunity to address the board about the proposed budget, ask questions and offer any tangible evidence before supervisors vote on the budget. The hearing will be held at the Jones County Courthouse in Ellisville, the same place the board will hold it’s first meeting of the month at 9:30 a.m.
The Board of Supervisors adopted a preliminary budget and tax levy at its August 16 board meeting. The budget proposes to decrease the county’s property tax revenue by 1.6 percent.
“This comes because of a reduction of our projected collection rate from 99 percent to 96 percent,” explained Board President Andy Dial. “The economy is hitting everyone pretty hard.”
Dial said property tax revenue is reduced from $20.5 million to $20.2 million ($20,493,264 to $20,153,753). The tax rate will remain the same as last year’s, which was 50.97 mills.
According to Dial, it would take a millage rate of 51.8 to produce the same amount of revenue from ad valorem taxes for Jones County government as was collected the prior year. However, Dial noted that since the Jones County Schools plan to increase its property tax rate by .77 mills to 53.77 mills, it would take a millage rate of 55.5 to produce the same amount of revenue from ad valorem taxes from Jones County Schools as collected last year.
Last year’s millage rate stood at 53 percent.
“We’re basically saying that because the school board was off in it its collection, we have to raise taxes,” explained Dial. “Homeowners of a $100,000 house will see their taxes go up $7 to $8.”
Dial also said that taxes could be higher for some residents, depending on a property reappraisal. Likewise, some property owners might not see a tax increase at all.
