Travel again an issue for city council

LAUREL — The Laurel City Council will once again consider approving a travel request during its meeting Tuesday.

During Wednesday’s agenda setting meeting, city officials discussed whether to approve an order authorizing payment of expenses associated with travel by the Hometown Retirement Community Director to AARP Conference, Sept. 30-Oct. 2, 2010.

Officials asked how the trip was going to be funded.

“We don’t have a dime to spend on things which are not mandatory,” said City Administrator Dennis Keveryn.

Councilman Trey Chinn said the trip may be necessary to help with the development of the city’s Hometown Retirement Program.

“We have just built a building for the seniors and our retirement program,” he said. “If we are going to have a retirement program then we are going to have to find out how we can best utilize the resources we have.”

According to city documents, the event will be in Orlando, Fla., and will not exceed $1,200, which will be taken from the mayor’s travel fund.

Officials said the trip has already been allocated in the current year’s budget.

The council will also consider granting an appeal hearing to Jerome and Deidra Hatten in regard to denial of a special exception to operate a portable restaurant at 710 E. 16th Street, which is located in Ward 4. The property is zoned Residential-2 (R-2) which does not allow commercial uses.

Also Tuesday, the council will consider granting a variance to Friendship Baptist Church in reference to front yard requirements in the R-3 district to allow a 10 to 12 foot front yard on the property known as 116 Custom Avenue.

According to city documents, the church plans to add a 5 feet extension to the front of the building. Property is located in Ward 5.

Also Tuesday, the council will consider making budget amendments for the city’s 2009-10 Fiscal Year; and adopting the tax assessment rolls for 2011 from the Jones County Tax Assessor.

These, along with other matters, will be presented to the City Council during its meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Council Chambers at Laurel City Hall.
