LAUREL —
Some students attending the Laurel School District will soon have access to a new dental outreach program designed to address students’ oral health.
The Laurel School Board recently approved the new outreach program called the RDC Mobile Dental Clinic School-Base Outreach Program.
Superintendent Dr. Chuck Benigno presented the board with the recommendation that the district implement the new program.
Benigno said “it’s an outstanding opportunity” for the students to have access to board certified dental care providers.
According to RDC information, “the purpose of this outreach program is to provide quality dental care (at no out-of-pocket cost) to individuals living in Mississippi who may otherwise not have access to dental care on a regular basis.
“Many Mississippians are under-served by the lack of providers accepting state and federal funded programs such as Medicaid and the Mississippi Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP),” according to RDC literature. “A full range of dental services will be offered and provided by a board certified dentist, dental hygienist and their staff.”
The program consists of a group of committed dentists, dental hygienists and dental assistants who promote excellence in oral health and provide dental services to patients in nontraditional settings. Using portable equipment, RDC Mobile provides high quality dental services in schools, other childcare facilities or Head Start Programs.
Benigno said as part of the program, the clinic will go to the district’s schools and “do dental check ups on our students.”
He said the clinic will not involve tooth extraction.
According to RDC’s information, the program provides examinations, cavity filings, sealants, fluoride, radiographs, free toothbrushes, cleansing, fluoride gel and referrals to a dental home.
The superintendent said the school district is “excited” about being able to help the students receive dental care.
School Board member Ann Barrow said the program “sounds fantastic.”
Other board members agreed and approved the program with a vote of 5-0.
Board Attorney Dick Yoder said parental consent would be needed before a child can participate in the program.
RDC Mobile Dental Program states that it intends to work with local Health Departments, Mississippi Department of Health, or any organization that will partner with us to help bring quality oral health care to the schools, Head Start and other community programs.
RDC states that the goal of the program is “to bring quality and convenient dental care to the students of south Mississippi.”
