Council to accept commercial subdivision Tuesday

Palomine lots include Murphy USA, future Krystal

The Laurel City Council is expected to accept a commercial subdivision during its meeting Tuesday.

The subdivision, which is being called the Palomine Subdivision, is located on Highway 15.

Linda Reinholtz, superintendent of the city’s Inspection Department, said the developers have completed most of the requirements necessary for the subdivision to be accepted by the city. She said the remaining matters are scheduled to be cleared up by Tuesday.

Several council members requested to see the plat of the subdivision, which Reinholtz said had been submitted to the inspection department.

According to documents submitted to the city, the developer is subdividing 3.44 acres of land into five lots.

“A part of the requirements is that they have to have it regulated into lots,” Reinholtz said. “Lot five is for the storm water retention and it cannot be built upon.”

Ken Keyes is a developer in this subdivision endeavor.

Murphy USA gas station is currently located on this busy section of Highway 15 near McDonald’s.

Murphy USA, a discount store with discount gasoline prices, traditionally locates near Wal-Mart stores.

Also earlier this year, the Krystal Company confirmed that its first Jones County store was scheduled to be open at this site.

Reinholtz said the Laurel Planning Commission in March approved the preliminary plat according to subdivision regulations.

According to city documents, the developer is required to construct the necessary sewer lines and water lines for the lots all according to the city’s certain minimum specifications.

The council will vote whether to accept the subdivision during its regular meeting Tuesday.

Also Tuesday, the council plans to make final changes to city ordinances regarding unauthorized vehicles in a residential area of town and consider granting several exceptions.

The council will also consider an ordinance regulating signs, particularly billboards, in certain areas of the city.

The council will consider these and other items during its meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the City Council Chambers at Laurel City Hall.
