A Bay Springs man cited in October for operating a puppy mill there will be in Jasper County Justice Court today.
Richard Stockman, of Bay Springs, is charged with operating a puppy mill where the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department seized more than 40 dogs in malnourished conditions.
Some 43 dogs including a wide variety of breeds such as Corgi, Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Chihuahua and Schnauzer were transported by Oxford, Miss.-based Tailwaggers for Life to the Oxford Humane Society.
Members of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASCPA) traveled to the area from New York City to assist in the investigation.
Animal cruelty investigator Sally Langley, who works with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, said Tuesday that Stockman’s appearance will be for a preliminary hearing.
“We’ll see what he pleads,” she said. “If he pleads guilty, we’ll do what we need to do. If not, we’ll go back in two weeks to present all of our evidence.”
At the time of the discovery, Jasper County Sheriff Kenneth Cross said Stockman was not arrested because he has to care for his shut-in mother. Cross was not available for comment Tuesday.
