A Trail of Daffodils

Group hopes to drape city in flowers

Come spring, Laurel residents will be able to see a noticeable change in a plot of land in Laurel’s Gardiner Park.

A small flower bed of colorful and cheerful daffodils will be in blossom and will serve as Laurel’s Park Place Garden Club’s link in a national civic beautification project called, “A Trail of Daffodils.” Sponsored by the National Council of Garden Clubs, the goal of “A Trail of Daffodils” is to blanket the cities and states of the United States with beautiful blooming daffodils in the spring of 2010 with local garden clubs and organizations accepting responsibility for planting daffodils in specific areas of their hometowns, explained Mary Anne Sumrall, president of Park Place Garden Club.

Since Gardiner Park has been the project park for Park Place Garden Club since 1927, members selected the historic park as the club’s area of responsibility and purchased daffodil bulbs to plant in the park.

Club member Susan Pounds and members of the Dandy Lions Junior Garden Club planted about 60 daffodils in the flower bed located at the section of the park near the intersection of 7th Street and 4th Avenue. Sponsored by the Park Place Garden Club, the Dandy Lions is a newly launched junior garden club whose members are sixth grade students at Laurel Christian School.

Park Place mentors — Sumrall, Pounds (junior garden club chairperson) and Paulette Boone (assistant chairperson) — instruct the junior gardeners on seasonal planting concepts, civic responsibility and provide a hands-on experience for the students.

“This sixth grade class is considered very special by the women of Park Place,” said Boone. “Not only do we hope to instill a love of nature and God’s beautiful earth, as well as an appreciation for conservation of our resources, but we will also endeavor to make the experience fun and educational.”

Peggy Gatlin, chairperson of Park Place’s daffodil project, said one of the exciting things about daffodils is that they grow back every year. The ones planted at the park Saturday will beautify the area for years to come.

“We thank to the city for preparing the area for us to plant the bulbs,” said Gatlin. “All we had to do is come here and plant our bulbs.”

The city also placed landscaping logs around the garden to protect it from mowers. “We just want everyone to be watching in the spring,” Gatlin said. “It will be something beautiful.”
