It took a jury only seven minutes to find 31-year-old Clarence Arrington guilty of felony escape Tuesday.
Arrington was convicted in the Jones County Circuit Court in Laurel for the January 2008 escape from the Laurel Police Department following an initial appearance in court for a grand larceny charge.
“He escaped from the holding cell, but was later captured on Elm Street,” said Detective Kevin Flynn of the Laurel Police Department. Arrington was also arrested in October 2009 for another crime.
In October, the Laurel Police Department held a press conference thanking the public for assisting them in solving an Oct. 18 residential burglary that led to the arrest of Arrington and three other people on charges ranging from drug possession, burglary and possession of firearms and stolen property. He was charged with one count of burglary to an occupied dwelling in connection to the burglary. Others arrested were Daisy Hunter, Marcus Antiono Lang and Stewart Alonzo Moffett.
“Arrington was out on bond when he was arrested in October,” explained Flynn.
Because he was considered to be a habitual offender, Circuit Judge Billy Joe Landrum sentenced Arrington to the maximum sentence, which is five years, with out parole.
District Attorney Tony Buckley was pleased with the speedy verdict and maximum sentence on Arrington. “It is time to start sending a message to these inmates that keep trying to run away from our law enforcement facilities,” he said. “Arrington will have a lot to think about as he sits behind bars for the next five years.”
