Pair injured in wreck outside Sheriff’s home

Driver allegedly under the influence at the time

Jones County Sheriff Alex Hodge had enough time to make it to his home and change out of his uniform early Monday night when he heard the loud noise.

His wife and 13-year-old son looked out and yelled that someone had just had a wreck in front of their home on Old Myrick Road.

“I went out in my front yard and there were two bodies lying there,” he said. “One was a white female and the other was a white male. They had just been involved in a one-vehicle accident.”

The sheriff dialed 911 and first responders were soon at the scene. Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna said Powers, Glade and M&M; volunteer fire departments responded to the accident, along with EmServ.

“It was a pretty serious accident,” he said. “As I understand it, the vehicle rolled several times and the victims were thrown from the vehicle. They received serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital.”

Hodge identified the victims as 30-year-old Lashanda Carraway and 36-year-old Michael Flynn, both of the Glade community. He said the two were not wearing seat belts and were ejected from the front window of a Dodge pick-up truck.

“The female was the driver of the vehicle,” he said. “Apparently she was driving under the influence when she left the road, hit two culverts and two drive ways which caused the vehicle to flip several times.

“They were both broken up pretty bad. The male was unconscious for about 10 minutes before the first responders got there. I’m told he was rushed right into surgery.”

Hodge said he can’t say enough about the danger of driving while under the influence of alcohol or any substance. “It’s hard enough trying to avoid accidents when you are sober,” he said. “I just can’t understand why people put themselves in this type of danger.”

In addition to jeopardizing their lives, those who drive under the influence jeopardize the lives of others. Hodge said the vehicle could have very well struck his home or the home of his neighbors.

“My wife and 13- and nine-year-old sons were at home with me,” said Hodge. “If they were out in the yard or something, they could have easily been hit.

“This was a bad scene and I honestly don’t know what it’s going to take to get people to think. Our prayers are with the victims and their families.”
