A Clarke County man died this week in connection with a traffic accident on Chantilly Street.
Billy Cooley, 28, of Shubuta, died Monday in a traffic accident on Chantilly/U.S. Highway 84 in the city limits of Laurel, according to officials.
Sgt. Michael Reaves with the Laurel Police Department said a Clarke County man, later identified as Cooley, was the victim in the one-vehicle crash near the Interstate-59 overpass Monday morning about 5 a.m.
The victim was transported from the accident scene to South Central Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Jones County Coroner Nancy Barnett said Cooley was pronounced dead at South Central Regional Medical Center.
Barnett said an autopsy on Cooley’s body has been ordered. However, the results of that autopsy had not been received at press time.
Reaves said Cooley was the only person involved in the crash, which occurred in front of the Huddle House.
“It appears that he was traveling west on Highway 84 when he left the roadway,” the police sergeant explained. “The vehicle left the road and struck a sign pole at the Exxon gas station.”
Officials are continuing to investigate the incident.
“Right now, we are still investigating, pending toxicology reports,” Reaves said, adding that “no other vehicles were involved in the incident and no foul play is suspected.”
