HEIDELBERG — Some voters in this Jasper County community will be going to the polls today to elect their representative on the East Jasper School Board.
Circuit Clerk Billy G. Rayner said its election time for school board representatives in District 4 of Jasper County.
“ The elections for Jasper County School Board for District Four are scheduled for Tuesday,” he said. “We were suppose to have election for District 4 school board members, and since we have two school districts an election was set for an East Jasper and a West Jasper representative.”
However, Rayner said, only one candidate qualified for the West Jasper District Four set.
“Four-West only had one candidate, Elizabeth McAlpin Jenkins, to qualify. So, since she had no opposition, no election was needed,” the circuit clerk explained. “Stanley Phillips, who was the incumbent school board member for Four-West, did not seek re-election.”
However, in East Jasper there are two candidates for the Four-East seat on the East Jasper School District.
Incumbent Bobbie “Molly” Whitfield and challenger Cheryl Gavin have both qualified for the election, according to officials.
Rayner said only five precincts — Heidelberg, Holders-Waldrup 1st Judicial District, Philadelphia, Claiborne and Vossburg — in the East Jasper School District are open for this election.
Polls in the designated areas will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. today.
Rayner said because the school board’s alignment is different, not all voters in the designated precincts are eligible to vote.
If you have a question about whether you are eligible to vote in this school board election, call Circuit Clerk Billy G. Rayner or his staff at (601) 764-2245.
