Sandersville hosts Neighborhood Watch kick-off

The Town of Sandersville will kicking off its Neighborhood Watch program today with a daylong celebration at Railroad Park off Highway 11.

Jimmy Robinson, who coordinated the day’s activities, said featured attractions will include police dogs, dancers from the Choctaw Reservation and refreshments.

“We’re trying to stress the importance of Neighborhood Watch,” he said.

Robinson said who the Jones County Sheriff’s Department is calling the “serial rapist” began his crime spree in Sandersville.

“The first attack was next door to me, right down the street,” he said. “He’s still out there and at work. They think he struck down in New Iberia, La.”

Robinson said the purpose of the Neighborhood Watch program is to discourage those types of crimes.

“We’re encouraging people to watch out for their neighbors,” he said. “If you see a strange automobile parked nearby, contact the police department and let them know. The same if you see strange activity going on. Neighborhood Watch encourages us to watch out for our neighbors.”

The event will last from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. today.
