Krewe of Docs raises funds for Relay for Life

LAUREL — The Cowboy Blues Band rocked the Laurel Train Depot Saturday night as Oncologics Inc. hosted the third annual “Krewe of Docs.”

The event, which is a fundraiser for Oncologics Inc.’s Relay for Life team, features area doctors serving a Cajun meal to those in attendance.

Ten doctors — ranging from oncologists, heart surgeons and dermatologists —participated in this year’s “Krewe of Docs” including several new to the area.

One of those was Dr. David Roy, a new dermatologist, who opened South Central Dermatology Clinic in September.

“This is a great opportunity,” Roy said, noting he enjoyed seeing area residents in another venue. “It also helps out a good cause.”

Dr. Chad Saul, a Laurel surgeon, said he has participated in the event since it began in 2009.

“I really enjoy the fun of it,” he said. “We get to serve in a different role than we usually do. Plus, it’s for a good cause. We all have cancer patients.”

Kelley McKee, a radiation therapist for Oncologics Inc., who helped coordinate the event, said she was excited about the large crowd packed into the Train Depot.

“This is our largest turnout,” she said. “We sold 165 tickets before this event. So far, we’ve received $9,000 in sponsorship money. We’ve also got some great silent auction items that were donated.”

McKee said that Oncologics Inc. also gets to see “American Cancer Society dollars in action” as the site of one of only four Cancer Resource Centers in the state of Mississippi.

Paige McCardle, senior community representative for the American Cancer Society, praised Oncologics Inc. for their work with the Cancer Resource Center, which is volunteer driven.

“There are only four in the state, here in Laurel, McComb, Meridian and Hattiesburg,” she said. “It has a volunteer staff, but they (Oncologics) do a lot with it. Dr. (Cameron) Pimperl (of Oncologics) is amazing and Kelley is their Relay team captain. This is a really great event.”
