The City of Soso held its hearing for the proposed budget for the 2010 Fiscal Year and approved it on the same day.
Soso’s budget hearing was held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, with no opposition from community residents. Shortly after the close of the hearing, the board voted to approve the $193,950 budget.
“This is the only meeting we are having this month,” explained City Clerk Jeanne Sherman. “So, the budget was approved (Tuesday) night.”
Soso Mayor Mike Moore also explained that Soso’s budget hearings are as eventful as those of the county’s larger cities. “We don’t collect any ad valorem taxes here,” he said. “All of our revenue is generated through sales taxes.”
Ad valorem tax is a levy imposed on the value of property. Cities, counties, and school districts raise most of their tax revenue from ad valorem taxes on real estate.
Soso’s $193,950 budget is a $32,910 increase of last year’s budget. But while the total budget is listed at $193,950, it is noted that $27,000 of that amount will be used to purchase a new police car. This leaves the city with an operational budget of $166,950.
A majority of the budget is salary or personnel. Administrative salaries are budgeted for $37,500, while the budget has $48,500 set aside for police salaries. The next largest expenditure on the city’s budget is $13,000 for utilities and telephone service.
