Six VFD's respond to blaze

Fire leaves 3 generations homeless

LAUREL — An early evening fire at the home of Cynthia Guy, 2723 Ovett-Moselle Road in Ovett, has left Ms. Guy, her daughter Shirley Loper and her two granddaughters Kara Loper, age three, and Karley Loper, age one, without a home and belongings. The owner and occupants were not at home at the time of the fire, but arrived later to find their home and personal belongings in flames.

Volunteer fire units from Ovett, Johnson, Union and Moselle responded to the call which was dispatched by Jones County 911 dispatchers at 6:55 p.m. and responded with multiple fire apparatus and volunteer firefighters. Arriving fire units reported heavy fire conditions in the double wide mobile home. As fire conditions worsened and additional manpower was needed, Glade VFD was dispatched to bring a pumper and tanker and stage at Ovett VFD's station. Both Glade trucks and firefighters soon joined the fight with Powers VFD being requested to stand by with Powers Rescue 1 at Glade's station to help cover calls in the southern part of the county.  While enroute to Glade, Powers Rescue 1 was diverted to a car fire at Dixie Electric Power Association which they handled and then were called directly to Ovett to provide manpower at the fire.

In addition to the mobile home fire in Ovett and the car fire in Powers, Southwest Jones VFD responded to a rollover accident with injuries on Interstate 59 at mile marker 76 during the same time span.

Ovett VFD Fire Chief Gordon Pitts served as Incident Commander with Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna, the American Red Cross and Dixie Electric Power Association also on the scene.

Firefighters attempted an interior attack; however, a pending roof collapse forced all fire efforts to be conducted from exterior positions and an attached porch roof. There were no reports of injuries to any firefighters at the scene and no cause of the fire was immediately determined. The home is deemed a total loss and the American Red Cross was on the scene assisting Ms. Guy and her family with emergency needs.

Volunteer fire units were still on the fire scene as of 10:30 p.m., conducting salvage and overhaul operations.
