Jasper County supervisors clean up inventory

BAY SPRINGS — The Jasper County Board of Supervisors Tuesday worked to handle numerous inventory discrepancies during its first meeting of the month.

Following some discussion, the board approved the junking of equipment presented by the Chancery Clerk, deletions of equipment by the Sheriff’s Office, deletions of equipment by the Jasper County Emergency Management and the junking of equipment from the Tax Assessor Collector Department. Based upon that action, they agreed to remove those items from the respective inventories.

The Jasper County Tax Assessor and Collector’s Office stated in a letter to the supervisors that the request from the assessor’s office for junking of equipment — which included a computer, monitor and printer — was “in response to missing items listed in the property audit results for Jasper County issued by the Office of the State Auditor, dated Aug. 13, 2010, and in an attempt to correct inventory rolls, the list (of items) was provided.

Items being junked on the Chancery Clerk’s inventory included a computer, laser printer, and a scanner. According to the paperwork, “all could not be repaired and has been replaced.”

The Emergency Management list of items refer to “lost or disposed equipment,” which included a variety of portable, mobile and high band radios.

The Sheriff’s Office’s inventory of items to be deleted included computers and various types of radios.

Jasper County Sheriff Kenneth Cross said these “items listed are older items that have been replaced and disposed of over a period of years and we are requesting that they be taken off of our inventory.”

Also Tuesday, the board approved the transfer of equipment from Chancery Clerk inventory to Chancery Court and to transfer some equipment from the Tax Assessor Collector’s inventory to the Chancery Clerk’s inventory.

Chancery Clerk Barbara Ravenhorst said the county is “just cleaning up our inventories. These are items that have been on there for years and need to be deleted.”

Board Attorney Ricky Ruffin said it’s important for county employees and officials to maintain proper inventories.

“Inventory is not something to be lacked with,” Ruffin said. “You have to be careful to handle it properly.”

Supervisor Henry Hayes said the county needs to look at job descriptions more closely and make sure everyone understands their duties.

President Johnny Rowell, who presided over Tuesday’s meeting, said he would be meeting with the county’s inventory clerk and those responsible for verifying inventory.

Also Tuesday, the supervisors approved more than 115 school bus turnarounds for the 2010-2011 year per request from the East Jasper School Board. The supervisors also approved one school bus turnaround at the request of the West Jasper School Board.

Also Tuesday, the Jasper supervisors approved the 2011 dues and registration fees to the Mississippi Chancery Clerk Association in the amount of $1,000 for Ravenhorst and the 2010-2011 dues to National Tactical Officers Association for Joseph White in the amount of $150.

The board also approved the expenses for Jody White to attend the Police Officer’s Training Academy on Nov. 16-17 in Pearl and expenses for Richard Goode to attend the academy on Oct. 11-15 in Pearl.

In other business, the board authorized the sheriff’s office to purchase two guns RRA semi-auto rifles model number AR1276 at $1,200 each for a total of $2,400 from Smith’s Speed Shop and declare a Ruger AC-556 Rifle as surplus property of the sheriff’s department and authorized it to be traded in accordance with instructions from the state auditor’s office.

Also Tuesday, the board agreed to allow the sheriff to purchase a taser for First District Constable Greg Terrell. The sheriff’s department will also make sure that Terrell is certified in the use of the taser.

In other business Tuesday, the supervisors approved a utility permit for Bay Springs Telephone Company for project #BR-0031(21)B on County Road 31.
