Victim underwent surgery, recovering

Shooter still being sought

LAUREL — The victim of a Wednesday night shooting incident has undergone surgery and is recovering at a local hospital, according to police.

Sgt. Jim Thornhill with the Laurel Police Department said a Laurel man was shot during an altercation around 8:27 p.m. Wednesday in the 1400 block of Roberts Street.

Thornhill said the victim was shot when he and another male – later identified as 20-year-old Kenneth Lee Dean of Laurel – got into an argument that escalated into shots being fired.

Thornhill said the victim, who has not been identified, was taken from the scene to South Central Regional Medical Center with gunshot wounds.

Thornhill said police have determined that several shots were fired and that more than one of the bullets hit the victim.

“Based on the witnesses, about five to six shots were fired,” the police sergeant explained. “The victim was shot more than once.”

Thornhill said the unidentified male victim from the shooting received injuries that could have been life-threatening.

“He received more than one gunshot wound and required emergency surgery,” the sergeant said. “According to hospital officials and his family, he underwent the surgery and is now recovering.”

Thornhill said police are searching for Dean as a person of interest in connection with the Wednesday evening incident.

Thornhill said police are continuing to investigate the incident to determine a motive for the altercation and the shooting.

According to police, the victim nor the alleged shooter lived on Roberts Street.

“Neither lived in the area,” he said. “Reportedly, it started out as an argument that led to a fight. Then there were shots fired.”

Thornhill said the victim is listed in stable condition at the hospital.

Police said they are asking for the public’s help in searching for Dean.

“We need the public’s help. We need anyone with information concerning this altercation to notify us,” Thornhill said. “We have received some tips concerning Dean’s whereabouts. Many of them have stated that the suspect may be in the western part of Jones County or in Hattiesburg. ... We are checking out all leads.”

Police said anyone with information concerning the shooting or the whereabouts of the person of interest can call the Laurel Police Department’s investigation division at 601-425-4711 or Crimestoppers at 601-428-STOP.
