LAUREL —
An apparent domestic dispute led to the Sunday morning automobile accident which ended the life of a 31-year-old Seminary woman.
Shuanita Weathersby, public information director for the Jones County Sheriff’s Department, said deputies investigating the accident report that Tonya West had an argument with her boyfriend, Steven Hancock and decided to drive away in his red Ford F150 pick-up.
Weathersby said it appears that Hancock didn’t know West had taken his vehicle until a friend told him.
“(Hancock) called in a report that his truck was stolen and left in a vehicle with his friend,” said Weathersby. “I don’t have the specific details, but he ended up on the back of the pick-up.”
Shortly thereafter, at about 11:11 a.m., West reportedly lost control of the vehicle causing it to leave the road and flip several times. West was pinned in the vehicle, while Hancock landed in a nearby wooded area.
“The female was pronounced dead on the scene by Jones County Coroner Nancy Barnett,” said Weathersby. “The male was transported to South Central Regional Medical Center with major injuries.”
Jones County deputies investigating the accident are Maj. Don Scott and Capt. Jerry Hutcheson. The investigation team also includes Investigator Wayne Black of the Jones County District Attorney’s Office.
Volunteer firefighter and rescue units from Soso, Calhoun, Hebron and Pleasant Ridge responded to the accident scene. Other responders were Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna, Fire Council Public Information Officer Lance Chancellor, Fire Chaplain Drew Blanton and EMServ Ambulance Service.
