City projects expected to gain approval

The Laurel City Council is expected to approve two major construction projects during its meeting today.

The city has received request from the administration for approval of close-out packages for the Jefferson Street Phase II Waterline Extension and Roadway Improvement Project and for the Wansley Road and Flynt Road Box Culvert Improvements Project.

According to documents presented to the city, Bush Construction Company has presented its request for final payment of the Jefferson Street Project totaling $44,981.04.

Last year, the City Council approved the construction for the Jefferson Street Phase II project.

Phase I of the project involved increasing the water flow on 16th Avenue to help accommodate the construction and operation of the new Hampton Inn and other businesses in the area. However, because of the locating of Buffalo Wild Wings and other possible business developments in that area, the need for Phase II became apparent.

Officials said Phase II was designed to widen the street along Jefferson Street from 16th Avenue to Stephens Avenue.

The money for Phase II of the project is suppose to come from the Public Utility Bond Issue.

According to city documents, the final construction cost of the project is $323,138.73.

Also today, the council will consider approving the close-out package for the Wansley Road and Flynt Road project.

According to documents presented to the city, Bush Construction Company has presented its request for final payment of the Wansley Road and Flynt Road project totaling $14,350.78.

In April 2009, after more than a year of preliminaries, city officials gave the green light toward the efforts to make some drainage improvements on roads along 16th Avenue.

These projects were designed to improve the flow of water along some of the city’s busiest streets – Flynt Road and Wansley Road.

The project included replacing the existing culverts under the roads, which were in poor condition and will be replaced with a concrete boxed culvert.

Engineers determined that once the problem at Flynt Road is corrected, it would create a problem at Wansley Road, if improvements were not made.

Wansley Road is down stream and the previous culvert was not large enough to handle the flow. The project replaced that culverts with more adequately-sized culverts.

According to city documents, the final construction cost of the Wansley Road and Flynt Road project is $203,913.74.

In other business, the Laurel City Council will also consider setting public hearings concerning property and deciding whether to approve several orders relating to city projects.

The council will meet at 5:30 p.m. today in the City Council Chambers at Laurel City Hall.
