Laurel —
Volunteer fire and rescue units from Johnson and Ovett were dispatched at approximately 11:30 a.m. Monday to a report of a storage building on fire at #475 Ira G. Odom Road.
A second alarm was requested by Ovett Assistant Fire Chief Jack Allen who served as Incident Commander dispatching Glade Volunteer Fire & Rescue to respond as well due to reports of multiple exposures being threatened by the fire. A M&M volunteer firefighter/medical first responder who was in the area also responded to assist.
Firefighters arrived to find the storage building fully involved in fire with a recreational vehicle (RV), camper and automobile already sustaining fire and heat damage. Ovett Engine 1 and Tanker 1, Johnson Engine 1 and Glade Engine 1 responded to the call and firefighters were quickly able to suppress the fire and save exposures but not before the storage building was completely destroyed.
The adult female homeowner was treated at the scene by EMServ Ambulance Service medics for heat exhaustion suffered while trying to fight the fire with a water hose. Firefighters used over 6,500 gallons of water from fire apparatus at the scene to extinguish the burning building and cool off surrounding exposures.
No cause of the fire was immediately determined and fire damage to the building and contents, RV, camper and automobile is likely to run into the thousands of dollars. Volunteer fire units were on the scene for over an hour conducting fire suppression, salvage and overhaul operations.
