May Day a rockin’ hit

Faculty and students at St. John’s Day School celebrated May Day Friday with rock and roll.

The 59th Annual St. John’s Day School May Day festivities attracted many family members and supporters as the school celebrated with the theme of “Rock in the USA.”

Suzanne Heflin choreographed and directed the classes’ performances of dances, songs and skits highlighting rock music through the decades.

Students in Randi Gatlin’s K-3 class kicked off the performances with the 1976 novelty song “Disco Duck” followed by “Shake Your Booty.”

Then, Jennifer Parker’s K-3 class performed to the classic tunes of “Carwash” and Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” while Misty Wilson’s K-4 class performed Kool and The Gang’s “Jungle Boogie.”

Suzie Walker’s sixth grade class climaxed the event with their performances of “Footloose” and “Flashdance What A Feeling.”

Twelve-year-old Abby Garmon, a sixth grader at St. John, said she was excited to be able to participate in the May Day festivities.

“I’m happy that we, the sixth graders, get to wrap the May Day Pole this year,” Garmon said. “I’ve gone nine years here at St. John and this has become a St. John tradition. ... I looked forward to this for some time because it’s fun and you get to go riding after the program is over.”
