(3 P.M. UPDATE) Bridge in Biloxi reopens ahead of schedule

BILOXI (AP) — A Biloxi bridge hit by a barge in March is back open, three days ahead of schedule.

The Popp's Ferry Bridge reopened to traffic at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, two weeks after Joe McGee Construction Co. Inc. of Lake, Miss., began work to replace two 90-foot sections.

Saturday's opening apparently will mean a $225,000 bonus for the company. Its contract gave it a bonus of $75,000 for each day the bridge is open before April 28.

The bridge's pedestrian walkway remains closed, because aluminum railing had to be made. It's set to open in June.
