T’ville Elem. students become Red Cross Heroes

Taylorsville Elementary School has the distinction of being the only Smith County School who is a Hero for the American Red Cross this year. The school raised $1,002.68 for their Hero School campaign for 2009.

Red Cross officials were on hand to speak to the entire elementary school this week and to present plaques to Yvonne Dees, principal.

“I am accepting these plaques on behalf of each of you who made a contribution. The awards are for you not the school. It is important that we help you to learn about helping others,” Dees said.

Peggy Owens-Mansfield, executive director of the Pine Belt Chapter, was joined by Smith County Red Cross Board members Charles White and Ken Odell to make the presentations.

“All the schools in Smith County raised a total of $1,942.53 for this year’s Heroes Campaign. That means Taylorsville Elementary raised more for the campaign than all the other schools combined and that is great!” Owens-Mansfield said.

Rita Kelly’s 4th grade had the largest total for an individual class with $370 collected.

Owens-Mansfield spoke to the students about what the Heroes Campaign was all about and how their money would be spent.

“Every penny you gave will be used in our four counties to help your friends and neighbors. The Heroes Campaign is for local use only so you will be helping people right here at home,” Owens-Mansfield said.

She also spoke about various programs and services including disaster assistance and health and safety classes.

“It is just heart warming to see children being given a chance to experience helping others. The lessons learned from helping others are so important to help children become caring adults. And regardless of what each of you gave ions were important because you gave what you could. Your local Red Cross thanks you for that help and for caring about others,” concluded Mrs. Owens-Mansfield.
