City Council will consider naming new S-Curve bridge

The Laurel City Council will once again consider a resolution that would petition the Mississippi Legislature and the Mississippi Department of Transportation to name the new S-Curve Bridge on I-59 in Laurel the David R. Brown Memorial Bridge.

During the Jan. 6 meeting, the council postponed the vote on the resolution after several questions concerning the matter were brought up by city council members and members of the public.

Councilman Tony Thaxton asked why the resolution had not followed the normal process and gone before the Planning Commission and a hearing conducted.

City attorney David Ratcliff said the city has an ordinance requiring the process to be conducted.

So, the council postponed the matter pending a review of the process and possible submission to the Planning Commission.

However during the council’s agenda setting meeting, Ratcliff resubmitted the document to the council for consideration at the council’s next meeting.

Ward Five Councilman Manuel Jones questioned why the item was being submitted if the person did not live in Laurel.

Ratcliff said the interstate was not the property of the city and that the council was only requesting that the state consider naming the bridge after Brown.

According to documents submitted to the council, Brown served as an area engineer for Jones County with MDOT and helped to design and implement the S-curve improvements.

However, Jones said the city’s ordinance requires the person to be deceased and to have lived in the city of Laurel. The councilman said while the person is deceased, nothing has been presented declaring that he lived in Laurel.

The City Council will consider this and other matters during its meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the City Council Chambers at Laurel City Hall.
