WJ puts dangers of tobacco in 'real time'

Photo/submitted

West Jones High school students walked the hallways Thursday morning — each representing the 350 lives taken each day from tobacco-related diseases. The event was held on the day of the nationwide Great American Smokeout. Students had their faces painted white to represent death and wore a white t-shirt with the names of people (family members included) who have passed away from tobacco-related diseases. A drummer gave the beat during the somber march. There was a display in the cafeteria Wednesday as students were able to view a healthy lung and a cancerous lung. Students were given information on the lungs and the effects that tobacco use has on the lungs. Members of the school’s Peer Council performed an experiment with "Smoking Suzie" smoking a cigarette and the residue (nicotine and tar) that collected on a piece of cotton, which represented the lungs. The students at lunch were amazed at the amount of residue on the cotton ball from a cigarette.
