Laurel to host Federation of Colored Women's Club state convention

The Laurel Federated Club will host the 100th Mississippi State Federation of Colored Women’s Club and Youth Affiliates Convention this weekend.

The event, which will be Oct. 31 through Nov. 2, will be held at the Laurel Hotel and Convention Center.

The local chapter has accepted the challenge and is looking forward to making it a great success.

Laurel Mayor Melvin Mack signed a proclamation recognizing the event.

Mack praised the work of the local residents and the work of the federated clubs.

“The Mississippi chapter of the Federation of Colored Women, with its charter in Vicksburg in 1903, joined the National Federation of Colored Women, and became a part of the oldest organization for women of Color in the United States,” he said referring to the group’s history. “The Mississippi Federation of Colored Women sponsors many events each year. The proceeds from the events are used to fund scholarships for qualifying high school seniors.”

Over 100 adults and 75 youth associates are expected to attend the annual event.

Mack, as mayor of the city of Laurel, declared Saturday, Nov. 1, as Mississippi Federation of Colored Women’s Day in the City of Laurel.

Mack encourages all citizens to join in supporting the worthy efforts of the local chapter throughout the year and in congratulating the State and National Federations on over 100 years of service.

The mayor “expressed gratitude for all members — past and present — who have played a magnificent role in the proud heritage of people of color and for their continuing leadership in improving the lives of our youth and preserving our culture.”

Mack said the city of Laurel encourages all citizens to support the worthy efforts of the local chapter by attending the opening session at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
